As one of our initiatives to build leadership capacity within the dance sector, Critical Path invites an independent choreographer, with experience of supporting other artists and initiating sector development projects to be Associate Artist for up to two years. These artists collaborate within our organisation extending their skills and understanding and gaining experience with a sector leader.
2017 Adelina Larsson (NSW)
Adelina is a Swedish/Australian choreographer, performer, educator, curator and producer. She instigates collaborations and projects that centers in interdisciplinary practices and works between the professional and community. She trained at DOCH Stockholm and CODARTS Rotterdam and since moving to Australia in 2007 she has choreographed and performed for performing arts companies presenting at Melbourne International Arts Festival, Federation Square, Sydney Opera House, The State Theatre Centre of WA, Australian Institute of Sport, The Canberra Theatre Centre and Fremantle Arts Centre. Adelina has worked with creative director Scott Rankin and Big hART arts and social change company, David Pledger Not yet it’s difficult (NYID), Margie Medlin, STRUT Dance, LINK Dance Company, Nadia Cusimano, Natalie Cursio, Trevor Jamieson, Yumi Umiumare, Paea Leach, Rhiannon Newton, Chrissie Parrott, QL2 Dance, You Are Here Festival, Short+Sweet Dance Festival as Festival Director, Ausdance NSW and ACT as Artistic Director of ACT Youth Dance Festival (2011-2013). 2014 Adelina choreographed ‘Hipbone Sticking Out’ and concert ‘MURRU’ by BighART opening the Melbourne International Arts Festival. In 2013 she choreographed ‘Oneness – Voice Without Form’ premiering at the Sydney Opera House in celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
She is the founder and director of Strange Attractor a choreographic development platform that offers infrastructure for independent artists to experiment and undertake artistic research. KOBALT WORKS (Belgium) in partnership with Critical Path invited Adelina to the 2015 Monsoon inter-cultural, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research lab. Adelina was recently appointed resident choreographer of BighART Arts and Social Change Company.
2015 & 2016 Samantha Chester (NSW & WA)
Sam is a dance theatre maker, movement director and educator. In the last decade she has also focused on activating affordable spaces for independent artists, and is currently Director of Sydney independent Dance Space ReadyMade Works. Most recently Sam has been interested in themes of the body as dilemma, as idea, as a system that can fail, and as an act of impossibility (developed from Barcelona Choreographic Exchange she attended as a Churchill Fellow in 2013). Sam is Lecturer Movement, Performing Arts & Movement Co-ordinator for the Acting Dept, Western Australian Performing Arts Academy.
2013 & 14 Paul Gazzola (SA)
Artist, curator, video maker & scenographer, since 1988 Paul has operated an interdisciplinary and socially engaged practice across art, architecture, performance, installation, choreography, scenographic design, video and theory. Creating and curating solo and community based works for galleries, museums, stages, site-specific settings, print and projection. The culmination of these varied inquiries – each distinctly exploring the spatial and performative relationships between the body, site, place and the built form – provide a unique platform of knowledge in his working life. He is currently Artistic Director of OSCA – Open Space Contemporary Arts, in South Australia.
