Lauren Brincat + Frances Barbe
Performance Instruments: Inhabiting Action, Posture and Materials
This residency facilitates a collaborative conversation between video and performance artist, Lauren Brincat and performance-maker, Frances Barbe. It applies creative processes and training structures from dance and theatre to creating and performing work in the context of visual art and performance art.
Lauren and Frances will work together for 5 days to generate live and video material. Brincat’s approach uses rule-based actions, ‘walking pieces’ and sculptural work in textiles. Barbe’s approach draws on Japanese butoh-based improvisation to cultivate creativity and a heightened state of presence through embodying imagery, inhabiting sculptural forms and working with materials.

Lauren Brincat has a practice that encompasses diverse media, from video and performance to sculpture and installation; influenced by her formal training in painting. She is known for a series of ‘walking pieces’. www.laurenbrincat.net
Frances Barbe is a Lecturer BA Performing Arts at WAAPA. Her focus is movement, creative process, devising and directing contemporary performance. She founded Fran Barbe & Guests in 2012.
