Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA)

Critical Path in partnership with NORPA, invited Thomas E.S. Kelly for a research residency to spend time in far north east NSW and NORPA to research his long-term project in development WOLLUMBIN WARNING in 2017.

In 2018-2020, Critical Path partnered with NORPA in an Artist Development Program INFORM to create a development space to explore and extend dance theatre practice in the Northern Rivers region. This program is focused on a series of 4 workshop-labs.

INFORM #1 (2018) took place in Lismore for a week with guest artist Nat Cursio that engaged with NORPA’s Artistic Director Julian Louis, Associate Director Kirk Page, some of NORPA’s Associate Artists, those involved in 2018 creative development for Wildskin and others connected to or living in the Northern Rivers region.

INFORM #2 (2018) was between artists local to the Northern Rivers region and Tokyo-based company Idiot Savant. Guest artists included Belloo Creative Co-Artistic Director and NORPA Associate Artist Caroline Dunphy, Idiot Savant Artistic Director Koh-Toh-Shi and Choreographer and performer Nao Akao.

INFORM #3 (2019) a week-long immersive workshop-lab took place in Lismore, in which participants explored the intersection of dance and theatre making and ways to create work using site responsive processes within our natural environment. INFORM #3 was facilitated by choreographer Alexandra Harrison. The participants were NORPA’s Associate Artists Kirk Page and Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal with creative producer Valley Lipcer, and local artists Colleen Coy, Gabby Le Brun, Gabrielle Griffin, Kimberley Mcintyre, Noa Rotem, Sinead Fell, Tahnee Arnold and Zoe Xanadu.  Regional NSW guest artist Lee Pemberton joined the group from Bega.

In 2019, Critical Path and NORPA collaborated also for the Critical Path Responsive Residency of artists Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal and Kirk Page. They spent one week at NORPA and one week at Critical Path to develop the choreography of movement and vocal duets for their project SMOKE.

INFORM #4 will take place in 2020.
