Land and Body research & practice development

Critical Path is supporting Carly Sheppard to participate this July/August in Dancing Earth’s summer Dance Intensive Institute in New Mexico. Dancing Earth invites exceptional emerging or mid career Indigenous artists for intensive training, land dance and creative incubation of choreography. Led by dance artist Rulan Tangen DANCING EARTH CREATIONS dynamically animates a mission to support Indigenous dance and related arts, to encourage and revitalize awareness of bio-cultural diversity through artistic expression for the education and wellness of all peoples.

Carly Sheppard is an emerging cross-disciplinary performance artist whose work negotiates across dance and theatre performance, sculpture, drawing, voice and installation. Often these forms feature interchangeably within a single work, housed within the foundation of the body moving.

Carly’s work predominantly explores the experience of being a part of the Indigenous diaspora of Australia; intersecting identities and the navigation of trans-generational inheritances, exploring the borders of ownership and autonomy, and the mapping of these shifting spaces and their interaction with changing social and cultural environments.

Carly is spending a week-long at The Drill as part of the Practice Development project to continuing exploring  further ideas on her project Crackers and Chase.

This is a follow up to the Dana Waranara convergence in 2015, and is a partnership between Critical Path, Performing Lines and Blakdance.

Based in Melbourne, Carly Sheppard is an Indigenous dancer and choreographer descending from the Wallangamma and Takalaka Tribes of North QLD. After studying at NAISDA Dance College and the Victorian College of the Arts, Carly has been training and working professionally in the dance industry for over eight years.
