Research Residencies 2022

Research Residencies

CALLING FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 2022 RESEARCH RESIDENCIES

APPLICATIONS CLOSE 10AM, TUESDAY 19 OCTOBER 2021

Critical Path is offering 4 funded artist-led research residencies in 2022.

Artists with a choreographic practice are invited to propose research projects that focus on explorations of new ideas, process or practice development without a pre-determined product outcome.

The research residencies are not available for creative development of new work, though they may allow early terrain explorations or deep digging into particular ideas and concerns. They may lay the foundation of new work.

Those artists selected for residencies will be asked to join a number of joint Research Artists gatherings across the year. Alongside their own personal (and/or collaborative) research project they will be asked to consider what parallel, or extension activities might take their or related area/s of research forward and broaden those artists who can be involved in research of these ideas/concerns.

Selected research artists will be funded (at industry adopted levels – $1,200 per week equivalent, and pro rata) and provided space to deliver activities as they need.  We do not put a specific level of support on this program at this stage so that artists are able to consider the key areas and possibilities without trying to fit into a prescribed ‘box’.

Critical Path has a number of existing and developing relationships with different partners, who may be able to support the research. Please let us know in your proposal about your interest to engage with different spaces, communities and contexts.

2021 artists have, as single or collaborative research leads, worked with additional artists in different ways and over varying time periods. Critical Path has considered how we can support and/or feed into other opportunities that the research artist/s have been offeredby different organisations, across the year.

Critical Path`s vision is built upon `Southern Lands and Skies` curatorial framework –

`Southern Lands and Skies` offers independent dance makers and choreographers opportunities to strengthen their practice and lay foundations for future work. We are making space for experimentation, connecting and exchanging across the country and overseas, taking and valuing risk.

Our activities fall under 4 guiding ‘constellations’ –

  • Australia’s First Peoples – continuing contemporary
  • Australia-Asia artist led initiatives and exchange
  • Regional and Remote collaborations & connections
  • Digital & Online choreographic work-space

We encourage applicants to consider how their research addresses this curation. If you have a project that is important to you but you feel does not meet these areas, you can still apply – the selection panel will still consider your proposal.

The selection panel includes artists/practitioners with a diversity of practice and experience. Artists are asked as part of their project to find a way to share their research more broadly. This can be through participation, presentation, publication, or other methods suitable to their practice.

ELIGIBILITY

The residencies are open to NSW-connected artists. As part of the application, you will be asked to indicate how you are connected to New South Wales (living or working or by Country). Due to our funding, at least one residency will be offered to an artist living or working in Sydney. You must be an artist with a choreographic practice working with a contemporary practice.
