LIFEGUARD examines notions of presence and the resonance of movement. The work aims to create an intimate space, where the spectator plays an essential role. A performance-based work that evolves with the different places and perceptions of the Other, LIFEGUARD allows for a minute examination of movement, calling into question the projection of our relationships. Questioning the place of the artist, the passivity of the spectator and the finesse of experience, LIFEGUARD proposes an uninhibited dialogue about existence.
Benoît Lachambre is one of the major artists/choreographers of his generation. He has created 15 works since the foundation of Par B.L.eux, participated in more than 20 others productions and was the choreographer of 25 commissioned works, for example I is memory (solo for Louise Lecavalier in 2006) and JJ’s Voice that he created for Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm in 2009. In March 2013, he created High heels too, a new choreography commissioned by the Cullberg Ballet. His latest work, Hyperterrestres, a co-production with French choreographer Fabrice Ramalingom and composer Hahn Rowe, had its North American premiere during the Festival Transamériques in Montréal in May 2015.
For the 20th Biennale of Sydney, between 2-11 April, Benoît Lachambre performed a slow time dance as part of ghost telephone, a month-long daily chain performance comprised of new interlinked works from internationally renowned artists. This project was curated by Adrian Heathfield, and especially commissioned for the Embassy of Spirits at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
